Rupaul’s Drag Race: Season 5, Episode 2
on February 6, 2013 at 10:18 amSo, when Ru said this episode would be all about drag herstory, I got so excited! Finally, they’re bringing in a historical context! What will they be referencing, Paris is Burning? Pink Flamingos? Stonewall?
Nope. Past seasons of the Drag Race.

Which, admittedly, was a lot of fun! Although the lip synch challenge might have seemed strange, I have seen drag queens incorporate that spoken word style into their stage acts, so it’s at least as relevant to the art of drag as any of this show’s other outrageous challenges.
Plus, it gave me an excuse to dig up some of my favorite old pieces, like Raja’s stunning powdered wig costume.
I loved the queens who brought a little something special to their lip synch performances–like Jinkx, with her sadsack rendition of Mimi, even though I wish she would have gotten rid of that troublesome lampshade! (It was, however, a funny homage to Mimi’s original and unforgettable headpiece, which I depicted in one of my very first Drag Race portraits!)

I couldn’t help but be tickled by Detox and Alaska, who definitely bring a sense of spontaneity and edge to these challenges. Who could resist that bloody, outrageous kiss between their Sharon and Phi Phi?
We’re still so early in the season that there are just too many damn queens on this show! And they really are all so good, it’s hard for any but the most outspoken to stand out. I’m hoping we continue to see a lot more of Jinkx, Honey, and Ivy, who’ve all suffered from lack of screen time.
The show didn’t seem to establish any particular theme for this week’s runway challenge, so a lot of queens seem to have brought out their craziest outfits, vying for attention. Most of them were totally fabulous, and it was hard picking just a few! (I mean seriously, I didn’t even have time for Ivy’s crazy butterfly outfit!)

First, Jinkx Monsoon! Yes, her outfit this week was very simple, but it was sleek and wonderful, and I adore this queen. Get used to it, girls!

Next, Alaska! Was this a showstopping outfit? No, but it was nice to see Alaska showing off a sleek, dark look.
Although some people might get sick of her raucous brand of humor, I think she’s smart and sharp enough to keep us guessing. If you doubt me, check out the preview for next week’s episode, where she slips in some delightfully twisted humor during an otherwise silly mini-challenge.
Serena ChaCha caught a lot of flak for her claims about bringing a unique, intellectual edge to the show–but in fact, I think it’s queens like Sharon Needles, Alaska, Jinkx, and Detox who are already bringing their own brands of self-aware, thoughtful, and transgressive sensibilities to drag, expanding its boundaries and categories. And, you know, having fun while they’re doing it!

Detox’s costume this week was all kinds of crazy–I can only guess that she was dressed as some sort of evil fairytale queen? But it was fun as hell to draw.

I was utterly transfixed by Honey’s runway look this week–something about the way she worked that flowing pink fabric made her seem otherworldly! I live for Honey’s sleek fashion, so I’m hoping we see a lot more of her.

And finally: Roxxxy Andrews! I thought this was a STUNNING look–Ms. Roxxxy is really growing on me. I’m guessing she’ll have a lot of variety and sophistication in her runways looks this season, and that they’ll leave all of us gagging.
Inevitably, the episode dedicated to revisiting the most dramatic scenes from past seasons led to one of the most unforgettable Untucked sequences in Drag Race herstory, featuring the utter annihilation of a drag queen. (Poor Serena!) If you missed it, you must go watch it now. Despite that cringe-inducing pile-on of Serena, the message from Monica’s mom was pretty special.
As always, you can buy prints and book collections of all my best art from past seasons of the Drag Race, and I’m hoping to make some Season 5 work available soon!

Was really hoping you’d draw Ivy and Jade Jolie this week.
Both Ivy and Jade looked amazing this week, but drawing just five of these queens nearly killed me!
Awesome, Jinkx Jinkx Jinkx Jinkx <3
You made Jinkx look ravishing! Even her hair!!! You are so diplomatic. Serena’s “Raja” was laughable. I can understand her point about trying to view drag techniques as an art (make-up/paint, sewing/soft-sculpture-particularly laughable association, and lip synching/performace art), but it seemed like she didn’t understand that her point of view wasn’t exactly new or ground breaking. Girl, maybe you’ve got a back catalog of ArtForum magazines and memorized Janson’s “History of Art,” but she failed to nail any one of those talents she was shooting for. Her work isn’t conceptual, it was just bad. It seemed like she saw “Paris is Burning” once and discussed it in a theory class, where someone like Coco Montrese has practically lived it and more aptly lived through it. I’m still upset at that tramp, howe’er I am LIVING for these images once again.
Thanks, Dan! I agree with your sentiment about Serena–she needed to master the fundamentals before trying out some grad level drag techniques!
How much time do you spend drawing each one of the queens?
I am drawing Britney Spears in Illustrator along two days, but I think you should be faster, since you do it as job (Do you?).
I would like to see some illustration of Jade Jolie. She is cute as hell!
Love Roxxxy and Alaska drawings, particulary.
Thanks! I would guess I spend 3-4 hours per image. I generally switch between them all while working, so it’s hard to keep track.
I like Jade Jolie a lot, and I thought this week’s costume was particularly striking. I was hoping to draw Ivy and Lineysha, too, but just didn’t have the time!
Your Roxxxy is amazing! You really captured the body ody ody under the movement of the costume.
I agree that Detox is very smart and transgressive, as you say.
I live for these posts! I agree with the others, more Jade!
Ha! I will try! Thanks!
We dont mind waiting a couple extra days if we get to see you draw a few more of the queens
You have an amazing talent and it leaves us very needy lol
Love-love-LOVE how you captured Roxxxy’s outfit; you made it animated without animating it!
As for the rest, you know how much I love your art, so I’m not going to repeat it ad nauseum. (Unless you want me to, of course.
)
SO glad this episode gave you a reason to show Raja again, but DAAAAAAMN, did ChaCha fail on an epic level! Did she not listen this week when Ru said “Don’t fuck it up!” ? While being the recipient of a verbal pile-on is not fun for anyone, you have to admit Miss Thing deserved every syllable of it. Note to ChaCha: You’re 21 years old, hon, you have a lot to learn–and it isn’t the stuff they taught you in college. Close your mouth and open your eyes and ears.
LOVED Alaska and Detox as Sharon and PhiPhi–and OMG, can Miss Coco lipsync! She was scary good.
Also, thank gawd we didn’t hear a single laugh from Jade Jolie–it made it a lot easier to see and appreciate her. I will chalk up last week to nerves on her part and leave it at that.
I am really surprised that you didn’t draw Ivy on stilts–that outfit was screaming for the Chad Sell treatment–but that can always wait until you have more time.
Thanks, Jade!
Here’s the thing about Ivy’s butterfly look–would I have drawn the stilts as they were? I always find that baggy area around the feet kind of ugly and awkward. But if I simplified the stilts too much, it would have looked like a long legged butterfly!
I think the best thing to do would be to ignore the stilts altogether and just depict Ivy flying with her butterfly wings…
i think ur show is great if only women wood look like these u have the world wood b a betta place <3 LOVE JOMNNALEE
I loooooove your work, and I’m so glad you like Jinkx too. It’s monsoon season!
